On Wednesday, 20 March, the President of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, Mr. Emmanuel Mountakis, the Treasurer Mr. Terry Saviolakis and Secretary, Ms. Sophia Komarkowski, paid a formal visit to the headquarters of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, in Sydney.
The members of the Executive of the Cretan Federation met with His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, to whom they expressed their love and respect, while they asked for and received his blessing, for the success of the mission they have undertaken since last January.
Responding with joy and cordiality, Archbishop Makarios wished the new leadership of the Cretan Federation to have a productive and fruitful tenure, and for God to always bless their works.
A constructive discussion followed, focusing on the needs of the Cretans of Oceania and their ties with the great island of Crete, the birthplace of the Archbishop of Australia. It was also agreed as a project to maintain and strengthen the ties of the new generation of Cretans with the culture and traditions of their homeland, it was also agreed to organise – by the Church and the Federation, together – a cultural activity aimed at the Cretan Youth.
Finally, Archbishop Makarios informed the Executive of the Cretan Federation in detail about the planned events for the centenary of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and about the Apostolic Visit of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to the fifth continent this coming October.
