The 83rd Anniversary of 28 October 1940 was celebrated in Sydney with splendour. The events in honour of the Heroes of the 1940 campaign culminated on Sunday, 29 October 2023, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady.

His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, who officiated at the Matins and presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, then presided over the Doxology Service for the Anniversary of “NO”, joined also by the Chancellor of the Holy Archdiocese, Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne Christophoros Krikelis, and by other clergy of the local Church, while in his message he emphasised, once again, the need “to preserve the memory of our national campaign in the younger generations, who are the present and the future of our Nation”.

After the Doxology Service, a Memorial Service was conducted by His Eminence at the Monument to the Fallen, which is located in the courtyard of the Cathedral, and was followed by the laying of wreaths in memory of those who fought and sacrificed for Faith and Country during the heroic campaign of 1940.

The anniversary events were attended by the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Yannis Mallikourtis, with his wife, the President of the Intercommunities Council, Mr. Kosmas Dimitriou, representatives of Greek associations and organisations, as well as young men and women of the Omogenia in traditional Greek costumes and with flags of Greece, Cyprus and Australia.
