On Friday, 7 April 2023, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia met with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion in Athens.
His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia received a warm welcome from the Greek Prime Minister, with whom he had the opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest, regarding the Hellenism of the fifth continent.
At the centre of their constructive discussion were issues related to the needs of the Greek Community in Australia, as well as the multidimensional work carried out by the Greek Orthodox Church, with an emphasis on the decisive role it plays in the direction of strengthening the bonds of Greeks in Australia with the motherland.
Also discussed was the issue of giving expatriate Greeks the right to vote from their permanent place of residence, starting with the upcoming national elections in Greece, and the mutual desire was expressed to relax the criteria so that all Greeks abroad who are registered in the electoral rolls in Greece can exercise this right.
At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister of Greece reiterated his support and appreciation for the work carried out by the Archbishop and the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia, while His Eminence wished him strength and success in his responsible work.
