Archbishop Makarios of Australia welcomes the new Consul General of Greece in Sydney

The new Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Georgios Skemperis, was warmly welcomed by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.

The newly arrived Greek diplomat to the Australian metropolis, on Thursday, 21 August 2025, visited to the headquarters of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, making his first official visit as Consul General. He was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Australia, His Excellency Mr. Stavros Venizelos, while at the entrance to the Archdiocese he was welcomed by His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, Chief Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod, Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne Christophoros Krikelis, Chancellor of the Holy Archdiocese, and Archdeacon Athinagoras Karakonstantakis.

Mr. Skemperis first took a tour of the historic Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady, where he was particularly impressed by the iconographic compositions that adorn it after its recent renovation.

Afterwards, he was welcomed at the Archdiocesan Office by the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, who was joined by Their Graces, the Bishops, members of the Holy Eparchial Synod.

His Eminence welcomed the new Consul General “to his home”, as he characteristically said, and expressed the certainty that the good and constructive cooperation between the Consulate General and the Holy Archdiocese will continue without interruption. Afterwards, lunch was served, during which the diners had the opportunity to discuss issues concerning the life of the Greek Diaspora and the presence and activity of the Orthodox Church, while everyone wished the new Consul General a productive and fruitful term.
