On Monday, 1 April, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia visited the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His Eminence received a warm welcome from the Rector of the historic Institution, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, in the presence of the Dean of the Theological School, Professor Emmanuel Karageorgoudis.
During the meeting, which was held in an excellent atmosphere, issues of mutual interest were discussed, with an emphasis on the possibilities of cooperation in the field of Education.
Archbishop Makarios provided a comprehensive and informative briefing to his interlocutors about the pastoral and social work carried out by the Orthodox Church of the fifth continent, while he gave particular importance to the national role it plays through the operation of educational institutions throughout Australia and through the implementation of actions and programs aimed at preserving the Greek Language and strengthening the bonds of the young people of the Greek Diaspora with the homeland.
At the end of the constructive discussion, both parties declared their intentions to develop close cooperation between the University of Athens and the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
