His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, arrived in Darwin on Saturday, 17 May 2025, in order to attend the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the new Greek Orthodox Church, which will be honoured in the name of Saint Savvas the New of Kalymnos.
Upon arrival at Darwin Airport, the Archbishop was warmly welcomed by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide, a delegation from the local Territory Parliament and the Protocol Office, the Greek-born Mayor of the city, Mr. Konstantinos Vatskalis, the Parish Priest of the Church of St. Nicholas, Archimandrite Joel Xanthos, together with the President and members of the Community, as well as a delegation of members of the newly established Parish, led by the Parish Priest, Fr. Christos Tsoraklidis and with a dynamic presence of youth and children, dressed in traditional Greek costumes.
During his stay in the Northern Territory of Australia, His Eminence will have meetings with Territory Authorities and with representatives of the Greek Community.
It should be noted that approximately 15,000 Greeks reside in the city of Darwin, primarily originating from the island of Kalymnos.
