
On Tuesday, 11 February 2025, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia presided over the Doxology Service which marked the beginning of the New Law Term in New South Wales, which took place at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Sydney.
His Eminence was joined by Their Graces, Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis and Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, while members of the Judiciary, led by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, The Hon. Andrew Bell, lawyers and students of Law, the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Ioannis Mallikourtis, as well as students of Saint Spyridon College, accompanied by the clergy of the Parish of Saint Spyridon, Father Steven Scoutas and Father Stavros Ivanos, and by its President, Mr. Elia Economou, were all in attendance.
At the end of the Doxology Service, Archbishop Makarios extended his due well wishes to the present officials of the Judiciary for the New Law Term, while underlining the important mission they are called to fulfill, defending the rule of law and ensuring the rights and freedoms of citizens. He also urged them to be inspired and draw strength from Christ in the exercise of their responsible duties.
A modest reception followed in the Hall of Saint Andrew’s Theological College. In his address during the reception, the Chief Justice, The Hon. Andrew Bell congratulated the Holy Archdiocese of Australia for the establishment of the celebration of the Doxology at the beginning of each Law Term, noting that numerous members of the Judiciary in New South Wales are of Greek origin and are fervent and devoted members of the Orthodox Church.
The Hon. Andrew Bell also referred to the multicultural and interfaith composition of Australian society, underlining the importance of mutual respect and equality at all levels, regardless of religious beliefs, language or origin. Finally, the Chief Justice addressed His Eminence Archbishop Makarios personally, whom he thanked for his unwavering support for the established Doxology Service for the beginning of the Law Term, while congratulating him on the beautiful and particularly impressive renovation of the Cathedral of Sydney.
